Cape Hillsborough

Cape Hillsborough is a National Park just 30 minutes North of Mackay. We arrived just after school holidays ended so the place was fairly quiet. We stayed at Smalley’s Beach which is very quaint with only 11 campsites. Our campsite had big shady trees with a lot of wildlife and a view of the ocean.

  • There are wallabies on Cape Hillsborough beach at sunrise. They are so cute and literally watch the sunrise with you.
  • We got kooka’ed. A kookaburra came and took the crispy bacon right off our plate.
  • There were hundreds of butterflies near our campsite.
  • The kookaburras had a rap off for us- it was the grubs vs the cleanies. It was the nature version of the dualing piano bar.
  • There was a bush stone curlew living near us and he would wander through our site looking for food at dusk.
  • We saw a family of rainbow bee eaters.
  • There were heaps of red tailed cockatoos. We even found three of them sitting in the middle of the street.
  • We watched a turkey get angry at a goanna and kick leaves at it to scare it away.
  • There were lots of great trail walks.
